ST JOHNS, NL – Like many other artists, Nico Paulo came to Newfoundland and didn’t leave. Instead she committed to stay and set up a studio/gallery for her visual art and continued on with her music career. “ I love it here. I wish all my friends in Toronto could visit and see this side of Canada,” said Paulo in conversation during a photo shoot at her gallery in downtown St John’s.

Paulo is a songwriter, performer, and visual artist whose debut in the Toronto music community did not go unnoticed. In 2014, Nico began writing original songs and experimenting with her singing. Originally from Portugal Nico called Toronto home for seven years and just recently moved to St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador. She performs her solo project and was the backup singer and percussionist for Tim Baker’s live band that toured across Canada, USA and Europe in ’19/’20. Nico released a single “Please Don’t Forget” with accompanying music video in 2019 as well as her debut Ep, ‘Wave Call’ in 2020.

Born in Toronto and raised in Portugal the connections between Newfoundland and Portugal are comfortable. She finds a deep connection between her two homes and feels quite at home here. Both her music and visual art work is flourishing in Newfoundland and Paulo attributes it to the supportive and diverse arts community in St John’s.

You can find Nico Paulo on Bandcamp, and Instagram.
